Throttle Freezes or Sticks

Overview

When a throttle freezes or sticks that is usually caused by a handlebar grip that is rubbing against the throttle or by the throttle being installed on a handlebar that is bent, out-of-round, or dirty in the place that the throttle is installed.

Handlebar Is Bent, Out-Of-Round, or Dirty

The handlebar may be bent, out-of-round, rusty, or dirty in the place where the throttle is installed on it. The way to test for this is to remove the throttle from the handlebar and see if it sticks when it is not installed on the handlebar. If the throttle only sticks when it is installed on the handlebar then a bent, out-of-round, rusty, or dirty handlebar is causing it to stick. A bur on the handlebar caused by the previous installation of a different throttle may also be causing the throttle to stick. The handlebar can be thoroughly cleaned and dried and any burs removed from it and then the throttle reinstalled. If after doing this the throttle still sticks then the handlebar will need to be replaced to resolve the issue.

Handlebar Grip Is Rubbing Against Throttle

The handlebar grip may be rubbing against the throttle or the throttle's grip and causing it to stick. A missing throttle spacer sleeve or washer can cause this to happen. The throttle spacer sleeve or washer is the part that keeps the handlebar grip from rubbing against the throttle grip. The way to test this is to move the handlebar grip outward so it is not touching the throttle grip. If the throttle only sticks when the handlebar grip is touching the throttle grip then a missing or damaged throttle spacer sleeve or washer is causing the throttle to stick.
